What Is Cranial Release Technique® (CRT)?

Cranial Release Technique® (CRT) is a holistic, hands-on approach to engaging the body’s natural capacity to heal and restore itself. Applied in only minutes, CRT has a profound and immediate impact on overall health and well-being. CRT has positive effects on physical conditions ranging from aches and pains to overall health and wellness. It’s the perfect compliment to anyone’s health care regimen.

What is Cranial-Based Healthcare?

About a century ago Dr. William G. Sutherland, an American physician, determined that the 22 bones found on the head move. Dr. Sutherland’s subsequent research revealed not only do the bones of the cranium move in a rhythmic pattern throughout life but he also determined this movement is essential to maintaining the proper function of the nervous system. He also found that when the skull is distorted the natural movement is disturbed which directly impacts overall health and well-being. Dr. Sutherland determined the movement of the cranial bones can be restored using proper hands-on methods (i.e. CRT).

Advances in modern medicine and technology have proven that movement of the cranium bones does exist. Numerous studies have determined that the position of the head bones can be manipulated and changed using hands-on techniques. Since Dr. William G. Sutherland discovery over 100 years ago, various schools of cranial techniques have developed.

Over the years, these methods all maintained several commonalities. They all found that the bones of the skull needed to be corrected individually, one at a time. In some schools, the skull was treated as a separate part of the body, with no mention of the impact of the cranium on overall body physiology and health. In the past, cranial work was very time-consuming, with session times lasting upwards of 45 minutes.

How is Cranial Release Technique® different?

The CRT approach is unique from other schools. With CRT, the whole cranium is “Released” or returned to normal function with one method. This “Release” of the bones of the cranium leads to a release of all of the tissues and structures associated with the skull, to include:

  • The spine and pelvis
  • The extremities (shoulders, hips, knees, etc.)
  • The Dura Mater (the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord)
  • The Fascia (a connective tissue envelope which runs head to toe, front to back, side to side and surrounds every organ, muscle, and vessels in the body)
  • The cerebrospinal fluid flow (essential to the health and proper function of the nervous system)

Due to the range of tissues and structures involved, the “Global Release” implemented by the Cranial Release Technique has far reaching positive effects on overall body function and health. Using the targeted CRT approach, the overall “Release” of cranial and body structure can be accomplished in just minutes!

What About Wellness Care?

Perhaps one of the greatest aspects of CRT is its capacity to restore and enhance health and wellness. We live in a stressful world. It’s so easy to get stressed out. In fact, stress is accountable for 90% of our body’s illness and injury! When the body holds stress for any extended period of time it becomes compromised, making it prone to injury and illness. Stress manifests as migraines, chronic headaches, mental/physical fatigue, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, poor quality/lack of sleep, balance issues, poor digestion, repetitive strain injuries, brain fog, and much more.

The initial investigations into Cranial Release Technique® and its effect on Heart Rate Variability (medically recognized as an indicator of stress) have shown that CRT has a positive impact on reversing this abnormal “stress state.” Many people report feeling an immediate sense of relaxation and ease following a CRT session. And this feeling lasts! Clients experience a sense of balance and peace throughout the day.

Chronic stress is detrimental to overall health and well-being. When we are stressed out, our nervous system goes into overdrive, producing harmful chemicals in response to the stress. Over time this “stress state” becomes very damaging, both physically and mentally. Your body is constantly in a state of either protection and survival or one of healing and regeneration. CRT can help to promote a return to healing, repair, and regeneration. It’s the ideal partner for your overall wellness program.

Can CRT Help me?

Many people with a wide range of health problems have experienced immediate relief using CRT. As the body returns to optimum balance and function, it becomes possible for true healing and repair to begin. CRT has even proven beneficial for those suffering from chronic ailments (even after conventional methods have failed).

As CRT practitioners, we consider ourselves to be facilitators of “Releasing” the body’s own innate capability to heal and restore. Once this goal is achieved, you’ll feel as good as new!
